چکیده

Chelonians remain one of the most popular types of reptiles kept in captivity, whether it be as a companion animal or a zoo/wildlife exhibit. Their characteristic shell can be a hindrance to veterinary evaluation and medical/surgical intervention. This masterclass focuses on the veterinary approach to these interesting animals and includes an introduction to the species, relevant anatomy and physiology, physical examination, sedation and anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, diagnostic sample collection and therapeutic routes for drug delivery including central line placement.

One foot out the door: limb function during swimming in terrestrial versus aquatic turtles.

Specialization for a new habitat often entails a cost to performance in the ancestral habitat. Although aquatic lifestyles are ancestral among extant cryptodiran turtles, multiple lineages, including tortoises (Testudinidae) and emydid box turtles (genus Terrapene), independently specialized for terrestrial habitats. To what extent is swimming function retained in such lineages despite terrestr...

The evolution of island gigantism and body size variation in tortoises and turtles.

Extant chelonians (turtles and tortoises) span almost four orders of magnitude of body size, including the startling examples of gigantism seen in the tortoises of the Galapagos and Seychelles islands. However, the evolutionary determinants of size diversity in chelonians are poorly understood. We present a comparative analysis of body size evolution in turtles and tortoises within a phylogenet...

Characteristics and Risk Assessment of International Trade in Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles in China

– Commercial exploitation of freshwater turtles and tortoises has increased significantly in China since the 1990s, which has expedited the listing of some turtle species in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II. We assessed the risk to tortoises and freshwater turtles native to China by analyzing biological and socio-economic variab...

1 Status of the World ’ s Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles

Some 350 species of tortoises and freshwater turtles exist on Earth, representatives of a lineage dating back to the dawn of the age of dinosaurs. While not as obviously visible as birds or ecologically dominant as large mammals or fish, turtles often fulfill important roles in the ecosystem, including seed dispersal and vegetation management, control of insect and snail populations, and keepin...

Microbiological and parasitological investigation on chelonians reared in Italian facilities.

The rapid rise in the number of pet chelonians and their illegal trade can modify the ecology, involving exotic pets, humans, and microbiological agents. Therefore, different epidemiological situations and the related risk to introduce and spread infectious diseases, especially zoonotic agents, have to be considered. The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiological and parasitologic...

Free-living and captive turtles and tortoises as carriers of new Chlamydia spp.

A variety of Chlamydia species belonging to the Chlamydiaceae family have been reported in reptilian hosts but scarce data about their occurrence in turtles and tortoises are available. In this study, research was conducted to acquire information on invasive alien species (IAS) of turtles and indigenous turtles and tortoises, living both free and in captivity, as possible reservoirs of Chlamydi...
